Those of you follows the market of Cloud solutions’ providers will have noted for sure certain phenomena and behaviours that emerged dramatically in the last years.

  • The biggest players, ie Microsoft, Amazon and Google, have an increasingly more sophisticated and complex offer that can fulfill most business needs, thus eliminating the internal infrastructure. Apart from this trio, a very few other players can compete in more than two or three sectors. Who seeks an all-around solution must rely upon one of these.
  • In general the prices of these three giants tend to be higher than the rest of the market, but there are sectors (where economies of scale help) where are definitely cheaper than the average. To the detriment of smaller providers.
  • Who shows up in a more aggressive way on the market and manages to gain success despite the aforementioned three giants, makes it with a very specific PaaS or SaaS architecture, think of Salesforce/Force.com: smart and well architected structured starting from the resolution of a problem in the best way possible.
  • Traditional SaaS solutions like emails or object storage platforms (like Dropbox & Co.) compete with great difficulty with these giants, not in terms of prices but rather in terms of added value that Amazon, Microsoft and Google can offer. Microsoft in particular stands in a predominant position in the SaaS world thanks to the legacy of its past and traditional software: Exchange, Office and Sharepoint. Products that are heavily used in the Enterprise world that suffice to persuade lots of companies to partner with Microsoft, regardless of prices and modalities and times of effective migration.

Hence who -like some of you- wants to emerge in the world of Cloud services must maintain a certain appeal in order not to lose clients. So it makes sense to sell cheap mailboxes, but also to offer a management system that provides an added value and specific services to attract and keep loyal clients. Otherwise you will be replaced by one of these giants.

An aspect not to be underestimated is the extreme management complexity of these platforms and the continue updating they undergo: if you can’t compete with services, then organise and learn how to compete in the management of these platforms. Even experienced IT Managers can experience lots of difficulties in understanding and managing platforms so extended and structured like Amazon’s AWS, Microsoft’s Azure and Office 365 or Google Cloud Platform. The same difficulties will be faced by companies that don’t have an internal skilled and expert IT department and will, consequently, rely upon partners and consultants.

Today VMware announced vSphere 6.5 at VMworld: let’s see what are the new features of a release that finally brings important improvements.

vCenter Server Appliance now has a installer with a new appearance and can be used from Linux and Mac too, and news about VCAS are not over yet.

Here’s 7 simple rules to follow in order to guarantee integrity of data, never forgetting good sense.

Actually, it’s like convincing someone of the usefulness of warm water - every professional of company should always have an updated and complete backup that provides an easy restore - yet unfortunately every time I talk with an IT responsible, consultant or sysadmin I discover, with my great surprise, that some basic concepts are misunderstood or ???, if not even unused.

Let’s list the 7 requisites of a good backup system.

1: “2 is better than 1”: an additional copy isn’t a pity
Don’t ever think that a single copy on an external HD, NAS or resource is enough. Failures are always around the corner and you’ll get to face them in the worst moments. Therefore duplicate your backups on two different supports at least, even if the main one seems to be adequately reliable. You don’t have to copy everything: if you make, say, a complete backup of each computer, probably copying terabytes of data is a waste. Backing up critical data (ie documents and emails) however must be done on (at least) two different supports, both of them reliable.

Exclusive interview with Rodolfo Rotondo, VMware Senior Business Solution Strategist (EMEA).

VMware has always been a leader in innovation, what do you think about the future, where do you see a better development opportunity? What is the technology that, according to your opinion, is today more “on the edge” in your vast offerings catalog?

VMware’s started to innovate since the ‘00s with computer virtualization, continuing with software defined data-center, a term coined by VMware itself, extending virtualization to networks and storage, then creating a bridge between on-premises data-center and public clouds thus allowing both a bidirectional transfer of workloads and an unified management and common policies, enabling real hybrid cloud. In a world in such a rapid evolution like the IT world, even operating systems are becoming obsolete. Some years ago the release of a new version of Windows Server was an epochal event, these days the width of change is way reduced and it’s perceived more as an integration to the previous versions rather than a turning point.

There are still a lot of new features for this new Windows Server 2016 that we cover in this issue, and perhaps the only real change is about the new licensing model that changes to keep pace with new processors that offer tens of cores. The second big news is the introduction of container, one of the hottest and most talked technologies in the IT sphere.

Containers represents a possible evolution, and by all means a different way of leveraging them, of the virtualization technologies we all know, and also an innovation that can make life easier in particular to developers. It’s not a phenomenon with the same range of virtualization or the Cloud. VMs, as a matter of fact, are part of the daily routine of every sysadmin, while Containers are a solution best suited to DevOps environments.

The actual bricks of the IT world of the future won’t be neither servers, VMs nor Containers: datacenters will be. In order to reach an higher level of reliability we will have to group different datacenters in a sort of “set” of Cloud that allows the reachability of such reliability, just as RAID, some years ago, dramatically changed the concept of data reliability itself.

Among the news of this issue, I’d like to note that we have two new sections devoted, respectively, to events related to the IT world and to the main news from the Datacenter and Cloud, Security and Content Management Systems (CMS, like Joomla and WordPress) sector. As you know we don’t have the utopistic goal of telling you in real time everything that happens in a such quick world as the IT one, so we’ll select the main news for you.
