IoT as a tool for companies
Interview with James Maynard of Fujitsu to talk about the potentialities of the Internet of Things as a way to improve safety and data analysis in professional environments.
IoT is an actual and important theme that, unfortunately, is only considered within the consumer sphere. Examples are several: a digital scale that is connected to the Internet and saves data, an appliance that upgrades its washing programmes or independently calls for support, and so forth.
In our interview with James Maynard (Offering Management Director Global IoT & Innovation of Fujitsu) at MWC we’ve instead talked about an IoT conceived not just for an appliance or a gadget, but also for the business world, with a particular carefulness about the concept of safety.
What is Fujitsu’s point of view regarding IoT?
Fujitsu is a company that mainly aims to the professional world, so IoT represents the future of technology to us, a new way of controlling the world around us to collect data, make previsions and interconnect devices.
Can all data collected by these devices bring to actual, useful results?
Sure, in particular our IoT technologies focus on topics, like creating an augmented reality, where data can make the jobs of techs and professionals way easier and, at the same time, dramatically improve safety of our on-the-field techs, for instance. Our Ubiquitousware software can collect data of several sensors and provide us with useful information. Predictions then are made using data analytics technologies and can predict reality using 68 different algorithms.
That suffices to say that Fujitsu is not just an hardware company…
No, actually, nowadays it’s quite hard to differentiate between these two areas, just think about the new monitoring systems for our server and storage platforms. Fujitsu deals with technology and innovation, the distinction between software and hardware is relatively important.
What are the fields that are covered with your IoT?
The application field is wide and ranges from public administration to the medical, construction, retail, telco, manufacturers, utilities, logistic, agriculture and educational sectors. It may not be clear at first sight but in all of these sectors, even if we just focus on monitoring and safety, the use of IoT technologies can dramatically improve both business processes and the overall level of safety.
