The two colossus of the ICT sector presented in Barcelona their new technology aimed to improve phone network coverage with a reduction of consumes and a better energy efficiency. The name of this new solutions is Extended Coverage Enhanced General Packet Radio Service (EC-EGPRS).

Some of the news that have been presented are Power Efficiency Operation (PEO) and extended Discontinuous Reception (eDRX) that could lead the way to the realization of devices with an autonomy that can be measured in terms of years and a greater bandwidth than the one allowed by GSM/GPRS networks. These technologies converge into the world of Internet of Things, which experiences a growing number of applications requiring high autonomy and wide geographical coverage.

At WMC Nokia and MediaTek will demo the new infrastructure by combining an EC-GPRS Nokia radio statio (Nokia Multiradio 10) with a mobile station equipped with a MediaTek modem and related software protocol.
